The purpose of the study focused on the impact of food insecurity in Bindura Rural District. The study also sought to establish the social protection systems in food insecure regions and recommend strategies for sustainable livelihoods for rural communities. The Sustainable livelihood Theory was used as the basis of the theoretical framework. The data was gathered using a case study and questionnaires research design with the qualitative method being the main research approach. The primary data was obtained from interviews conducted with selected key informants. The findings indicated that the efforts made by donors though not sustainable should not be underrated since the government could not respond to the needs of the communities. The results also show that the aid given by the government, churches and members of parliament was limited to the vulnerable people only and it was mainly relief aid. It is the view of the study that the Zimbabwe rural communities must participate fully in the conceptualization, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the governmentinitiated food security programmes for sustainable livelihood to be attained.
