MetadataShow full item record
The aim of this study was to establish the effect of veld fires on food security in Gutu (SERIMA Ward 4), its extent, and what could be done to mitigate the problem. The researcher used questionnaires, interviews, and observations to establish how veld fires could affect food production and storage in the area. Veld fires destroyed crops in the fields, gardens, granaries, livestock and grazing lands. It also caused the destruction of grazing lands and the environmental beauty. Fruits trees were burnt to ashes which then complement the gathering of wild fruit. Management of veld fires should be an urgent and drastic exercise so as to combat the issue of climate. The government should enforce environmental laws which include the EMA Act Chapter 20:27 that restrict the starting of fires. The Environmental Management Authority should initiate the mitigation strategies which ensures fire management at ward level. The use of bottom up approach in management of veld fires gives the community a chance of participation in fire management.
